What can you do in and around Kuala Lumpur (wikitravel) or KL as we call it?
And what about facilities and amenities?
Firstly, wherever you go on foot, you may want to wear a hat or carry an umbrella. You can tell if is going to rain but it can often be very sunny and humid. Hopefully, it would be less humid and less sunny on those days. Also, as with most big cities, beware of pickpockets in crowds and snatch thieves on passing motorcycles.
The AMG venue is at the fringe of the old city centre. Behind it are bazaars, shops selling textiles, local restaurants and food stalls. The area covers Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India, both quite famous in this old part of town. Incidentally, 'Jalan' means Road when it comes to signages which many of you would have guessed by now.
Points of interest in the old town:
- Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India (Little India - there happens to be 2 Little India townships in KL. The other is in Brickfields where KL Sentral Station is located) as mentioned. Ask your hotel about the bazaar on Jalan Masjid India.
- Sogo - an old Japanese mall now owned and run by a local entity. On Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Has a supermarket and department store. It is beside the Bandaraya LRT station but as with the other LRT stations in the vicinity of the AMG venue, reaching this station would also take 10-minutes on foot.
- CapSquare - new area in front of the event venue. Has a smaller supermarket, a small cinema with special focus on Bollywood films and lots of eateries and cafes. Pubs are open at night.
- Dataran Merdeka (map) and Sultan Abdul Samad building - this is where the 100-metre flag pole and the clock tower is. Walk south along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to get there. It's just a little bit further than the Masjid Jamek LRT station.
- Masjid Jamek (Jamek Mosque) is an old mosque built at the confluence of Gombak River and Klang River. It is visible from the Masjid Jamek LRT station which is about 10 minutes from Maytower on foot.
- Central Market (map) - walk a further 10-15 minutes south of Masjid Jamek LRT station or get off at Pasar Seni LRT station and you will arrive at this handicraft indoor bazaar.
- Petaling Street (map - Chinatown includes Jalan Tun H.S. Lee) - about 5 minutes away on foot from Central Market. Food and merchandise. Many hostels and backpacker lodges are at Jalan Tun H.S. Lee
Points of interest in the new town i.e. Golden Triangle Area:
- Jalan Bukit Bintang. (Map) - 5-star hotels, branded items, shopping malls (Lot 10, Sungei Wang, Pavillion, Bukit Bintang Plaza) merged with reflexology and massage shops, local chinese street food, entertainment, pubs & clubs, hookah/sheesha smoking and middle-eastern food. Vehicle traffic is heavy here despide having wide roads. The RapidKL Monorail stops at the Bukit Bintang monorail stationhere.
- Jalan Imbi - you may walk from Jalan Bukit Bintang or stop at the next RapidKL metro, Imbi monorail station (map). A less congested area than Bukit Bintang, there is Berjaya Times Square, a 10-storey shopping mall and the Pudu Prison nearby. The prison has been earmarked for demolition. It used to be famous with painted murals on the wall all around it. For you gadget-lovers out there, Low Yat Plaza, located between Jalan Imbi and Jalan Bukit Bintang offers a whole range of computing, gadgets, phones, cameras and accessories.
- KLCC (Map) - technically this area includes the KLCC park, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Trader's Hotel, the KLCC Convention Centre and of course the Petronas Twin Towers. Suria KLCC shopping mall is at the base of the Towers and Aquaria, the aquarium is at the convention centre but both are connected via a pedestrian tunnel. To get here from the AMG venue, use RapidKL buses U22, U26, U28, U29, U30 or stop at the KLCC LRT station.
It is also possible to walk from Pavillion (map) at Bukit Bintang to Aquaria (map) via a 10-minute walk on overhead bridges and along pavements. Also housed are Petrosains (science/geology centre), Petronas Art Gallery and a Philharmonic concert hall. If you want to visit the Petronas bridge on the 41st/42nd floor, you will need to queue up for the FREE tickets on the day itself. Tickets for the day have been known to be snapped up by 9:15 am.
- Jalan P. Ramlee (Map) - This road links Jalan Ampang to Jalan Sultan Ismail, these two roads intesect directly further down the road. Clubs, bistros, pubs and diners, this whole road peaks only at night. Strictly for night-clubbers, alcohol-drinking and merry-making. The nearest metro is the Bukit Nanas monorail station, only a 5-minute walk from the Dang Wangi LRT station, which itself requires 10-minutes on foot from the AMG venue.
- Asian Heritage Row (Jalan Doraisamy) See Map - Located right beside Sheraton Imperial Hotel. It is the same road to walk along to get to the AMG venue if any of you are staying at Sheraton Imperial. Also has clubs, bistros, pubs and diners. It used to be for clubbers and drinkers here in the past but has now edged more into having a good nightlife experience while dining as well. There are also outdoor eateries nearby. Called as such due to the number of pre-WW2 shophouses that are being preserved as a heritage. . The Medan Tuanku monorail station is the nearest metro and also the nearest monorail station to the AMG venue.
- Jalan Ampang - A very long main road with busy vehicle traffic but this is where the following are located: Renaissance Hotel, Hotel Maya, MaTIC (Malaysian Tourism Information Centre - map), Zouk club (map), the front entrance to Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC LRT station, Corus Hotel (map), Citibank and InterContinental Hotel (map).
In fact, Jalan Ampang runs for 10 km from the old KL town area all the way to the foothills of the Klang Valley in the east which is already in the state of Selangor.
Several good spa & massage centres are on this road:
-Hotel Maya's Spa (map) provides Balinese, Thai and Malay treatments,
-The Sompoton at Lanson Place Ambassador Row (map) is cheap compared to Maya and has Balinese and Malay treatments,
-Energy at Great Eastern Mall (map) provides alternative healing massages and gym workout.
All the RapidKL buses mentioned that serve between the AMG venue to KLCC will also pass by these places on Jalan Ampang.
- Mandara Spa is also available at Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Renaissance Hotel at a higher price (Location of these hotels have already been provided under Lodging). For the cheapest quality experience try Thai Oddyssey at Berjaya Times Square (map).
- KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur) - this is visible from anywhere around KL and is located on top of Bukit Nanas (Pineapple Hill if you translate it). There is a revolving restaurant on top but the food isn't very nice. On a clear day, you'll get to see the hills around 2/3 of KL and will understand the term Klang Valley. The only entrance to the tower is through Jalan Puncak, off Jalan P. Ramlee (the club-less end). See map. There will be shuttle services from the security house at the base of the hill to take you to the top.

Besides being a city, Kuala Lumpur is also a Federal Territory within the state of Selangor. Development is no longer contained in Kuala Lumpur but has spread to the whole Klang Valley covering Petaling Jaya (PJ), Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Puchong and even Kajang. Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital is not too far either. So some of the places you might want to consider visiting also would be:
- Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur - take KTM Komuter train to Batu Caves Station (route) Trains pass the old Kuala Lumpur KTM station and KL Sentral Station.
- Old Kuala Lumpur KTM station and the KTM headquarters opposite it are both heritage buildings. They are both within walking distance from the National Mosque and the Islamic Arts Museum. KTM Komuter trains still stop at this station. Pasar Seni LRT station is also very near this station.

The man-made city with a man-made lake was commissioned by the 4th Prime Minister (completed in 1999) and has beautiful architectural and structural designs and a city layout that centres on the Prime Minister's Department as the most important institution in Malaysia.
- Architecturally interesting mosques - in Shah Alam, the blue-domed Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque and at Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur, Masjid Wilayah (or Federal Territory Mosque)

Originally, housed in an indoor wet market, it has spread outdoors under canopies, shoplots and as stalls covering a big triangle defined by Jalan Pudu, Jalan Pasar and Jalan Yew. You may walk from Jalan Imbi to the back of Berjaya Times Square and through the Pudu township (passing Jalan Landak) where you can find stalls and shoplots offering breakfast/brunch/lunch and witness many old folks having dim sum outdoors along the way. Or just get off the Pudu LRT station and explore the area. Click here for food in the Pudu area
